The browser wars are getting hot. In response to the latest version of Chrome launched by Google and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9, Mozilla Foundation has unveiled the latest version of the Firefox browser – Mozilla Firefox 4.
The browser seems to be making waves as it has managed to beat Internet Explorer’s download count of 2.3 million in a time-frame of 24 hours. The hash tag ‘firefox’ is already trending on twitter
Released on March 22, 2011, Firefox 4 is the newest version of the popular, free and open source web browser. The Mozilla Foundation claims the new version lets the users take control of their web experience and is expected to be two to six times faster than its previous versions.
The latest version is presented in a swanky new look which lets the Web content take the centre stage.
New features include improved “doorhanger” notifications, application tabs, a redesigned extension manager, and support for multi-touch displays.
The user interface looks significantly different from the earlier versions. Tabs are now on the top of the window (as in Google Chrome) and the ‘stop’, ‘refresh’ and ‘go’ buttons have been coalesced into a single button. The button dynamically changes based on the current state of the page.
Another striking feature of the new release is the Firefox Panorama which allows the users to drag and drop tabs into windows called “groups” and then perform various operations on groups.
The new ‘Add-ons’ manager lets users discover and install add-ons without ever leaving Firefox.
The developers have decided to retain some text-book Firefox features like Integrated WebSearch, Spell Checker, Session Restore, Form Complete, Pop-up blocker, Password Manager and Switch-to-tab.
Available in 70 different languages the new Firefox can be downloaded for free to all Mac, Windows, and Linux devices.
According to StarCounter global market share figures for browsers, Firefox commands about 30% of the market share standing next to Internet Explorer which enjoys 45% of the market share.
