Yahoo launches Android, iPhone apps search engine

Yahoo! Inc. has launched a new search engine for iPhone and Android apps, allowing users to track down new services and access reviews.

Yahoo noted that there are more than 350,000 apps existing in the Apple App Store and more than 200,000 in the Android Market, meaning it can be an “exhausting and challenging” experience to track down desired services.

Yahoo new apps search engine works similarly to its web search, by sorting through the iPhone and Android apps on the basis of keywords or search terms input by users.

The App Search results page then lists any matching titles, contribution a description, price details; complete star rating from other users and a screenshot. Results can be filtered by device (Android or iPhone), as well as by price (free or paid) and genre.

Separate tabs have been included to aid discovery, such as Top Trending, Top Free, Top Paid and Most Reviewed apps. Feedback and ratings can be left for any apps used.

After deciding to download a particular app, users can either click ‘send app to phone’ to receive an SMS from Yahoo containing a link to download the app.

Alternatively they can access direct links to iTunes or the Android Market, or scan QR codes in the App Search results to start downloading the app straight away.

“Only Yahoo App Search has both the search technology and is device agnostic so can offer users a choice of both Android and iPhone,” said James Gammon, Yahoo search product marketing manager.

“Yahoo App Search not only makes it easy to find and download apps that you are looking for but also discovers new apps.”
